Then one day, an excited Edgar is taken to a tree lot, but he still isn’t wanted. Is he destined never to find a place, or will a family finally come around and take him home? The story warmly reminds us that everyone has a role in the world, and they can shine wherever they are. G.R. Saunders’ Edgar’s Christmas Wish is delightful and has a positive message. Kids expect instant gratification, and this book gently shows them that perseverance and love can lead to great things. As an educator, I think it could also be used to initiate discussions on goals and how to achieve them. It would also work well during the holidays simply as a Christmas read to enjoy. Teachers could even extend the book by incorporating activities such as decorating paper Christmas trees, writing affirmations, or sharing acts of kindness. I also liked the artwork by Dante Saunders, which perfectly matches the tone and theme of the story. Overall, it’s a heartwarming tale that blends inspiration with holiday cheer, making it both meaningful and fun to share.

In Edgar's Christmas Wish, G.R. Saunders tells a warm and uplifting holiday story about finding where you truly belong. The story takes place in a quiet, snowy forest where Edgar, a small evergreen tree, dreams of being chosen as a family's Christmas tree. Even though he's not as big or full as the other trees, Edgar does his best to grow tall and strong, hoping he'll be chosen. When he finally takes to a Christmas tree lot, he's full of excitement. But as bigger, more perfect-looking trees are picked one by one, Edgar starts to worry. By Christmas Eve, he's the only tree left, and starts to wonder if anyone will ever choose him. Then, in a touching moment, a family comes along and sees Edgar not for his flaws, but for how special he truly is. They choose him, showing that what makes us different can be exactly what makes us special. Saunders writes in a gentle and comforting tone that's easy for children to understand, especially those who sometimes feel unsure about themselves, or compare themselves to others. The story moves at a calm, steady pace which lets kids experience Edgar's hopes and worries in real time, and also makes the happy ending feel that much more meaningful. The story also shares important messages about patience, believing in yourself, and understanding that Christmas is really about love and kindness, not being perfect. Complementing the story are Dante Saunders' illustrations, which bring warmth and feeling to every page. The artwork does a wonderful job at enhancing the emotional tone of the story, capturing and contrasting the loneliness of the tree lot and then the joyful intimacy of a family Christmas. This also helps deepen readers' connection to Edgar, making his journey that much more special. With its heartfelt message, engaging story, and beautiful illustrations, Edgar's Christmas Wish is a lovely book that families will enjoy reading together year after year.
