The illustrations by Olena Khakovenko are a fantastic blend of realism in full color and more muted background tones that allow for Brady, his yard pals, and those big, bad shadows to really pop. Together, Manente and Khakovenko have crafted a perfect addition to our bedtime reading routine. – Jamie Michele, Readers’ Favorite
Pattie Manente expertly weaves profoundly important coping mechanisms in a tidy little children’s book. Brady succeeds in facing his fear by using quieting, breathing, and affirmations, which is the real, albeit nuanced, point of the story. – Asher Syed, Readers’ Favorite

I have taught Kindergarten for 22 years and I have read many books over my career. Brady and the Backyard Monster will now be used every year in my class. My students loved it and wanted to hear it again! That’s a wonderful sign! All of us fell in love with the drawings and related to adorable pup, Brady, and his fear of the unknown! This book can used to teach and discuss courage, friendships, normal fears and over coming them. I will also use it during my Shadows Unit around Groundhogs Day! A must have and a must read!

Pattie Manente’s, “Brady and the Backyard Monster,” illustrated by Olena Kharkovenko, is magnificent! It explores a youth’s fear that we can all learn from. It has an insightful story with beautiful artwork on each page about a lovely, nervous puppy named Brady who develops a big fear of a monster! There are twists and turns along the way involving appearances from the monster and friendly neighborhood animals. Furthermore, there is mystery, suspense, and fright, as well as charm, problem solving, happiness, and learning. This story allows much to be explored for a curious mind and much to learn from, including ways to cope with fear. For these reasons and more, I highly recommend this story for children and adults alike. Excellently done!

Brady is a cute pup with the best expressions in this fun story about how to manage fear. We’re all afraid sometimes as demonstrated by Brady’s friends. They encourage him to be brave, and they share ways to self-calm and cope when scared. These are great age-appropriate strategies for ages 3-8.
