5 Reasons to Read to Your Kids and Establish a Reading Routine:

Reading to your child isn’t just a bonding time for you and them, it can actually be beneficial to their development! Need convincing?

Here are 5 ways that reading benefits your child:

1 – Improves Their Literacy Skills

Reading aloud to your kids helps them develop their vocabulary and comprehension skills. It also exposes them to different types of writing, which can help them become better writers themselves.

2 – Encourages Their Imagination and Creativity

Books can transport children to new worlds and help them develop their imaginations. They can also inspire children to be creative and come up with their own stories.

3 – Promotes Empathy and Understanding for Others

Books can help children learn about different cultures and perspectives. They can also help them develop empathy for others.

4 – Provides a Sense of Security and Comfort

Reading to your kids can help them feel safe and loved. It can also be a great way to bond with them and create lasting memories.

5 – It’s FUN!

Reading can be a great way to relax and unwind after a long day. It can also be a fun activity to do with your kids.

Convinced you should read to your kids and ready to create your own reading routine together?

Here are 5 ways to develop your child’s love for reading:

Reading should never be a forced or “for punishment” task. Instead, it should be a fun experience for both you and your child to enjoy together. (Even if you aren’t a big reader, getting started can help you enjoy books, too.)

Here are 5 ways to get your child to start enjoying books.

1 – Start Reading to them Early

The earlier you start reading to your kids, the better. Even if they’re just babies, they’ll still enjoy hearing your voice and being close to you.

2 – Make it a Part of Your Daily Routine

Set aside some time each day to read to your kids. Even if it’s just for 15 minutes, it’s better than nothing. (Hint: Bedtime is a great place to start!)

3 – Choose Books that Your Kids will Enjoy

The reason a lot of people don’t believe they enjoy reading is because they’ve never read about something they enjoy. There are so many great books out there for kids of all ages though, that it shouldn’t be hard to find stories about the topics your kids love.

Take some time to browse your library or bookstore together and find books that your kids will be interested in. (Pro Tip: Go together and let them choose the story that seems fun to them.)

4 – Make Reading Fun

Don’t be afraid to get creative with your reading sessions. (No one will be judging you and your kids will find you funny.) You can make up voices for the characters, act out the story, or even create your own illustrations.

5 – Read Together

Reading together is a great way to bond with your kids and create lasting memories. So grab a book and cuddle up with your little ones for some quality time.

Reading is a gift that you can give your kids that will last a lifetime. So start reading to them today!

PS: Did you get an idea for a story after reading to your kids? We’d love to hear it! Parents are some of the best writers when it comes to kids’ books because they know what a child (and parents) are looking for at the bookstore.

If you’re ready to make your story idea into a book, we’d love to help make it possible! Apply to work with us here.
